You need a hobby. Not a comfort binge of Netflix or your fifth rewatch of forkin’ The Good Place. I’m talking about a real hobby, something that gets your hands dirty, your brain ticking, and your creativity fired up in unexpected ways. For artists, hobbies are an underrated goldmine of fresh perspectives, inspiration, and those weird moments where things click that you can pump straight into your work.
But here’s the thing: your hobby shouldn’t be tied to your craft. It can’t be. Seriously, if the only thing fueling your art is… other art? Congratulations, you’re stuck in an echo chamber. Break out. Get weird. Do something unrelated.
Take me, for instance. Locked in Love’s story is currently set in a winery, a setting inspired by my foray into winemaking. Did I plan this connection between BDSM dynamics and the millennia old tradition of fermentation? Nope. But watching a carboy of mead bubble away somehow forced neurons in my head to connect the idea of winemaking to relationships maturing over time.
Not every hobby will stick, and that’s okay. Over the years, I’ve picked up and put down hobbies and fascinations left and right, from gardening during the pandemic to weight lifting to playing the trumpet. When I was experimenting with my art and looking for my voice, I discovered shibari (to wit; a fancy way to tie naked people up), which led me to taking classes, which led to explore the greater kink scene in my city, which I turned into my creative voice. Each hobby, even the fleeting ones, adds depth to your creative toolkit.
So, pick something. Anything. Dive in. And if it bores you? Chuck it aside and do something else. But don’t skip this step. Your art will thank you.
January Plans
Locked In Love: Alex and Addy have finally reached the winery The Cherry Brandy Club. They quickly find out that the VIP experience is a bit more involved than they anticipated.

Vaporware Vixens: Angela has gone off script, and the rest of the Vixens are getting a bit edgy as the target’s entourage realizes something is amiss.
